what I read in january

january was too long and too much so I finished less books than usual

this felt like a dream that turns into a nightmare for a bit, with a main character that's incredibly thoughtful and sweet, naive and determined

I think the less you know the more enjoyable the experience will be

I loved this read because we have this surreal elements and a character that is so pure that it can be painful to read, because you just know that state isn't sustainable and life has its lesson to give

I enjoyed seeing so many layers, so many experiences described and implied that many this such a satisfying read

the story is told in phone calls and voicemails with a full cast and sound effects

we start with mother-daughter calls, the mother trying to set her daughter up to find a husband, the daughter feels the pressure and we can tell she's tired of this dynamic that's been going on for years but one bad date with a guy her mother found for her ends up with her meeting a guy that's just perfect, but is he too good to be true?

this is where we go from a too common story of parents doing things "all in the name of knowing and wanting better" with a touch of comedy to an unexpected supernatural thriller

we're following a cop and a dispatcher working on a missing person case, in this world when people get murdered 999 times out of 1k they come back as if the murder never happened so there are dispatchers now that, when a person is about to die of natural causes to never return again, is in charge of killing the person as soon as it's known there's no other way of saving them so they can wake up and have a second chance

this story is 2 hours and 18 minutes long but there's enough going on to keep us entertained and questioning how this kind of world presents different sides of morality

this is a paranormal thriller perfect for people that like true crime and serial killer stories

I loved the the vibes, you truly feel how unsettling the motel is and all the emotions these characters experience

this take on women helping women was top tier

we're following 2 characters on 2 timelines, both trying to solve a mystery in a place that has many secrets and ghosts

we're following Kara who's a fanfic fan and freelance graphic designer that just got divorced and is moving back home

while she's helping at her uncle's museum she finds a portal to alternate realities

she explores this portal with Simon, an old friend with the best reactions, anecdotes, and outfits

I loved the sense of humor of Kara and Simon, the uncle and cat were very entertaining too and what we see in the portal made this one of my favorite horror reads

I loved this dynamic

Nate is a soft boy, smart and outspoken and Vanessa is a strong badass head of the business while being caring with her family

I loved that it's plot heavy, we have the mafia issues that need to be handled balanced with the chemistry Vanessa and Nate have; seeing their relationship evolve was very entertaining and satisfying and will definitely continue the series

maybe it hit harder because of the current state of the world but rather than being afraid of the magical mysterious being I was afraid of the people

their entitlement, lack of empathy, and all the abuse

this book was difficult to get through

I'll always love seeing characters with adhd vibes and Troy is a hyper ball of sunshine, so bubbly and sweet, completely dedicated to the game and doing what's needed to deliver his best, so I adore him!

both Sam and Troy have been through some stuff but it's a very easy read managing to have an insta love couple that has soulmate vibes, their chemistry is strong and that first kiss is hot!

this opening! contrasting with the image of Saint that we have in the first book was so effective, in only a few pages I was already feeling the intensity of all the what ifs and regrets...

Saint is my favorite character so far, he was flawed, self-aware, and did what needed to be done to make Cor feel safe

we're following Mael Nguyen who's a warlock with secrets, living in a sentient house with his kid in New Orleans

Mael runs a magic bookshop and gets hired to find lost items, and we start the book with Leo Greyson, an energetic bubbly human that's looking to hire him to find a missing dragon egg

this human has some rare magic he's not aware of but Mael can sense it and is very intrigued by it

this is a plot heavy story with a sweet and spicy romance, with very interesting characters, amazing outfits, and wholesome found family vibes

this is book 1 but we do get a HEA, we're left wanting to know more with a hint of what's to come but there's no cliffhanger so it's very satisfying to read

I'm obsessed with this book and can't wait to read more about this world

the 2 books I haven't finished but will

I'm 30% in and loving the the banter
